From Hot to Cool: How REDMAGIC Revolutionized the Internal Cooling System

It’s almost imperative for a smartphone to be built with some type of thermal control system that helps prevent the device from overheating when charging or when you have a lot of apps open, most often a heat sink. Anyone who’s ever used their smartphone to play games for an extended amount of time knows that this heat sink also comes in handy when gaming, so it goes without saying that a dedicated gaming smartphone would come with a dedicated cooling system.

When the REDMAGIC 3 hit the scene in 2019, REDMAGIC became the first smartphone with a built-in fan, setting a new standard for gaming smartphone heat management. The internal cooling system has been a main priority with every new generation of REDMAGIC, and we’ve stayed on top of the heat management game in the years since. It’s been an interesting evolution of the REDMAGIC cooling system, join us on this trip down memory lane as we recap on how far we’ve come.

The First of Its Kind: REDMAGIC 3 & 3S

The REDMAGIC 3 came with features that had never been seen in any smartphone before according to reviews conducted by Notebook Check, including the ability to shoot 8K videos, and of course the built-in fan. Tests revealed that with the fan turned on, the REDMAGIC 3’s surface temperature drops by up to 1.5 °C. This was a relatively small temperature drop, but it was enough to take the device from around 44°C to between 30 and 40°C once it got too hot.

15,000 RPM Turbo Fan: REDMAGIC 5G

The REDMAGIC 3 series was followed by the REDMAGIC 5G, which can dissipate heat 30% more efficiently thanks to the improved north to south flow of air and a bigger air duct radiator. A report posted by Gadgets 360 reveals that the second generation cooling system has a fan that spins at 15,000 rpm, plus it features a high performance thermally conductive gel that takes cooling up a notch. In his teardown of the REDMAGIC 5G, JerryRigEverything describes the metallic heat sink of the cooling system as being similar to the ones we find in a PC, highlighting the high quality of the components.

The REDMAGIC ICE System Is Born: REDMAGIC 6

The REDMAGIC 6 marked the beginning of REDMAGIC’s now iconic ICE Cooling Mechanism with the ICE 6.0. The REDMAGIC 6 was the first of our devices to boast the 20,000 RPM turbo fan that became a part of the next few generations of REDMAGIC smartphones.

Results from the GSMArena stress test showed that the cooling fan delivers sufficient airflow to maintain the device’s higher speed for a longer duration. Without the fan, the Snapdragon 888’s CPU had to throttle down to around 85% of its performance, but with the fan, it was able to sustain approximately 94% of its maximum performance.

REDMAGIC 7 Series: Evidence of Our Commitment

The REDMAGIC 7S Pro comes fitted with the ICE 10.0 Cooling System that made cooling more efficient than the previous generation. In the 3DMARK Wild Life Stress test by TechPowerUp, the REDMAGIC 7S temperature rose from 30°C (idle) to 50°C (max) by the end of the test. The highest score was 10,806, and the lowest was 10,623, giving it an impressive stability rating of 98.3%. TechPowerUp described this as an improvement from previous models, noting it as evidence of our commitment to creating top-tier gaming devices.

The jump from 94% to 98.3% in the stability rating proves the effectiveness of the cooling system and fan that other phones lack that really make a difference in demanding situations like the 3DMARK Wild Life Stress Test.

When the Best Became the Best: REDMAGIC 8 Series

The REDMAGIC 8 Pro came with an all new generation of REDMAGIC cooling that we named ICE 11.0. It features 10 layers of cooling technology, all stacked into the neat little frame. The most notable improvements from the previous ICE 10.0 is the double layered vapor chamber cooling plate that covers the entire back panel of the phone, including the battery. The screen also got improved cooling with a dedicated graphing layer that’s meant to draw heat away from your fingertips as you play.

The Cooling Power that Is Now: REDMAGIC 9 Series

REDMAGIC’s ICE 13.0 and 13.5 cooling mechanisms are housed within the REDMAGIC 9 Pro and 9S Pro respectively. The REDMAGIC 9 Pro ensures gamers stay cool with its ICE 13.0 cooling system, reducing temperatures by up to 18°C. The REDMAGIC 9S Pro takes it even further with the advanced ICE 13.5 cooling system, engineered to keep your gaming device cool and unstoppable during the most intense gaming sessions.

GSMArena, who reviewed the REDMAGIC 9S reports that cooling efficiency has increased by 20%, delivering a temperature drop of up to 19.5°C.

The Advancement of Thermal Control: The REDMAGIC Cooling System Journey

The evolution of REDMAGIC’s internal cooling systems highlights our commitment to enhancing gaming performance through innovative heat management. From the groundbreaking built-in fan of the REDMAGIC 3 to the advanced ICE 13.5 system in the REDMAGIC 9S Pro, we’ve consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible.

Each generation has seen improvements that keep our devices cool and efficient, even during the most demanding gaming sessions, ensuring that REDMAGIC remains at the forefront of gaming technology.
